I wrote a little story about Kaylee and Dean on my day off yesterday. I wanted to explain the characters a little bit before posting anything else about them.
Robot parts: right arm from below the elbow, both legs from right above the knees, plexiglass chest piece covering artificial lungs, right robot eye, targeting array implant in her head.
What they do: her right arm is basically it’s own weapon, her legs make her jump crazy high/far, her lungs allow her to breathe radioactive air, her eye lets her see at night (she switches her eye patch to her real eye in the dark), and the targeting array let’s her…well…target.
Why: Kaylee has a fairly common disease colloquially known as The Rot. Parts of her body disintegrate and fall off or stop working. Her robot parts have replaced parts that have been amputated or no longer work.
Downsides: Kaylee has phantom limb in her right arm, causing occasional twitching in her robot arm. Her legs have exposed wiring, so any water causes serious shocks. Her targeting array causes her body to boot up slowly in the morning, and it takes her thirty seconds to wake up. And her eye is tough to look at, making her a little scary with wires and scars.
Okay, so on our first time going into this NPC town, we met up with some local guy NPC and Kaylee got in a fight with him. Basically just a giant pissing contest. We finally learned his name, and our DM wanted to sort of “punish” me for fighting with him, so she named him Dean (after Dean Winchester from Supernatural). So we wind up taking Dean into our party. I asked what he looked like. The DM, hysterical with our antics (it’s her first time DMing) says “You know what? He LOOKS like Dean Winchester, too!” We had no idea that Dean would turn into such a major character, so we just had to go along with her name. Oh well!
So, as I mentioned before, I’ve been getting a little burnt out at my particular LARP, but I’ve figured out what’s been causing it. So I’ve decided to start over from square one. I’m doing what I love to do, and why I got into LARPing to begin with. The immersion. I’m going to immerse myself completely. Even if I’m with someone alone, I’m keeping with my character. I’m going to break character only when absolutely necessary. Other than that, I’m applying all my old character study techniques to Sara. Including mood playlists, character development, the whole nine yards. I’ve never had a problem keeping in-character, but I’ve found that if one person breaks, then everyone does. I want our game to be a wonderfully immerse world. I don’t really have the right to complain about out of character moments when I have them all the time, as well. I’m hoping to lead by example, and at least encourage more people to keep things in game.
Another thing I want to try is to completely alleviate negativity. We all have gripes, but I’m going to try my absolute hardest to keep a positive outlook on anything, and that kind of goes hand-in-hand with staying in character. As a player rep, I get a lot of out of character comments about personal issues, and it brings a LOT of negativity to me. I can have a perfectly wonderful event, but all of the negativity I get from complaints can actually keep me from having a good time. So, other than absolutely important issues that need to be taken care of, I’m going to stick to the positive. Unless it’s an in-game issue that I’m in-game very upset about, then…well, you get it.
Fortunately, that doesn’t really change much for you guys, my followers. I just wanted to let you guys know where I’m at in terms of LARPing. I love this LARP and I don’t want to get burnt out, so I’m going to take a fresh new look at it. That might mean more posts about Sara in the future!
